David Fonseca - Business Research Assistant

Progress can be defined as the advance toward a higher or better stage. As a student at TAMUCC I strive to achieve academic goals that contribute to my progress for becoming a business professional. For as long as I can remember, I have looked forward to a meaningful business career that would proactively contribute to the community I am a part of. I am David Fonseca Huertas. I was born in 1988 in Bogota Colombia were I graduated from St George's school. This school incorporates foreign languages into its academic curriculum, including both French and English, as well as it's traditional instruction in Spanish. My education and coursework were immersed in English. This language proficiency encouraged in me a curiosity for all things American. I chose to attend this Island University because of the reputation of its Business Department. I believe that here I will have an education in new ways of thinking and thus achieve a level of ability that I could not find in Colombia. I try to achieve good grades in all my subjects, knowing that the world requires intelligent people with good ideas, and a great amount of energy to devote to a good cause. As a Junior with three semesters of experience devoted to coursework, I have made the Dean's List and sustained a 3.7 grade point average. I have also joined the Islander Soccer team and become a member of the Colombian Association. From the time I began studying at the University, I have been working as a Computer Lab Assistant in the Micro Computer Lab. My responsibilities include assistance with student computer accounts, wireless registration, media services, and general computer troubleshooting. This job has allowed me to better understand computer technology and enabled me to expand my customer service skills. In the summer of 2008, I started to work with Dr Jorgensen where I translated 3 questionnaires from English to Spanish for a survey that I assisted in conducting over the phone. This survey included a number of issues concerning the Coastal Bend area, such as alcohol awareness and city services. For me, a University cannot teach you everything in books, you must apply what you learn. For that reason, I am a student worker for the Coastal Bend Business Innovation Center and this is a good opportunity to put into practice the things that I have learned from my professors, textbook reading, and homework assignments. I am grateful to be involved in this project and take satisfaction in making the most of the experience. As the Poet Oliver Holmes once stated "The great thing in the world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving".
